Obituary for Duke Edmund Cain
Duke Edmund Cain passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018. A native of Jackson, born September 30, 1951, he was the son of the late Benton Edmund Cain and Lorene Thornton Cain. Duke grew up in a family of talented musicians and became an accomplished cellist who often performed locally and played with the Jackson Symphony for several years. He graduated from Murrah High School in 1969, and from Rhodes College in 1973 with a degree in Economics and Finance. While at Rhodes, he served as president of the Student Government Association, co-editor of the student newspaper, and was elected to the college’s Hall of Fame. After taking a year off to travel through North Africa and to work as an admissions counselor at Rhodes, he entered Emory University’s graduate school of business where he received his MBA in 1976. He married Susan Smith Cain, whom he met at Rhodes, in 1975, and they moved back to Jackson in 1976 where he joined the family printing business, Cain Lithographers. Duke was active throughout his career in printing industry associations and served on the board of directors of the Printing Industry Association of the South. He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral where he served on the vestry, taught Sunday school, led the junior high youth group and coordinated programs related to substance abuse recovery. Duke served as President or Board Chair of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, the National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence of MS, Leadership Jackson Alumni, National Kidney Foundation of Mississippi, and Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. He was also a graduate of Leadership Mississippi and the University of the South School of Theology’s Education for Ministry program, Duke is survived by his wife, Susan, of Jackson, MS, sisters, Lucy Cain Hargis, of Houston, TX and Mary Alicia Cain DeLoache (Bill), of Nashville, TN; brother, Michael Benton Cain (Becky), of Jackson, MS; sister-in-law, Julie Morey (Glenn), of Denver, CO; nieces, Mary Olivia Macgowan and Hannah Johnson; nephews: Dustin Cain, Russell Cain, Billy Hargis, Ben DeLoache, Will DeLoache, and Duke DeLoache; and six great nieces and great nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19th at St. Andrews Cathedral. The family will be present for visitation after 11:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Interment will follow in the Columbarium at St. Andrews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Cathedral, Harbor House of Jackson, or the charity of your choice.
